Alexis Avedisian is a communications professional and writer. She is the current Communications Manager of NYC Media Lab, a public-private partnership launched by the New York City Economic Development Corporation, Columbia University and New York University. NYC Media Lab connects digital media and technology companies with the City's universities to drive innovation, entrepreneurship and talent development. In 2016, she joined the committee for Therozing the Web, an annual conference that brings together scholars, journalists, artists, activists, and technology practitioners to think conceptually and critically about the interrelationships between the internet and society. Alexis also serves as an organizing member of Tech Action, where she programs monthly meetings to increase public awareness of technology’s role in social democracy. Tech Action received a mention in The New York Times.
Her writing explores the social implications of online networks—including surveillance capitalism and the attention economy—as a means to critique new artistic and political practices. She holds a BFA from Tufts University and an MA in Arts Administration from NYU Steinhardt.
